Presidents Perspective Presidents Perspective

Hello and here's to hoping that April showers bring May flowers!

Speaking of flowers, I would like to thank Holland America Bulb Farms, Benno and Klazina Dobbe, their family and their entire staff a great after hours. The food, music, fields of flowers, visiting all the vendors and guests was absolutely fantastic. If you were not there you missed a great time. It is definitely a fun filled by everyone. Thanks to all involved.

Get ready to be contacted by our golf committee as we gear up for fun day at Lewis River Golf Course on August 14th. We still need sponsors, golfers and volunteers to help the day of the tournament, so if you want to have some fun golfing, sell raffle tickets or just enjoy talking to all of us golf hackers, see me or any one of our
committee members and we will sign you up!! The food is great too!!

We are always looking for new ideas and guest speakers for our lunch
meetings, so if you have any suggestions please contact Sharon at the chamber office. Please remember that this is YOUR chamber and we want to do all we can to help your business and our community succeed.

If you have the chance, please read the April 4th issue of the Vancouver Business Journal. There is a great article about our Woodland Chamber.

We have much to be proud of, and being recognized by our adjacent community is great exposure. See you at our next lunch meeting.

Lewis River Emergency Seawall Exercise
Date of Event: May 13, 2008

News Release/Public Announcement

The City of Woodland and Cowlitz County Diking District #2 will be conducting an exercise on May 13, 2008 to test the deployment of the emergency seawall at the intersection of N. Goerig Street and Lewis River Road. The exercise will allow workers to install a portion of the seawall to determine if all the necessary parts are available and in good condition. It will also give workers an opportunity to properly deploy the seawall to be better prepared in case of an emergency.

The City of Woodland and Diking District personnel will coordinate these activities with the Washington State Department of Transportation. The road will not be closed but traffic may be required to slow down upon entering the work zone on Lewis River Road.

Please expect intermittent delays beginning in the early morning of May 13, 2008 and throughout the day. Also, a small section from the intersection of N. Goerig to Rosewood Street will be closed to allow for the staging of the materials and equipment. The alternate route will be via Old Pacific Highway and East Scott Avenue.

Additional information may be obtained by calling the City of Woodland at (360) 225-8281 or by visiting the city website at: www.ci.woodland.wa.us

Many have asked about the start time. Public Works and Police report that they will stage at 7:00 a.m. and the exercise event will begin at approximately 9:00 a.m.

Mosby Insurance 15th Anniversary Announcement

The Washington Prescription Drug Program (WPDP)

In March of 2007, Washington State introduced the WA Prescription Drug Program (WPDP) Discount Card. This is a state-sponsored prescription drug discount card for all uninsured WA State residents administered by the Northwest Prescription Drug Consortium. Right now, more than 75,000 Washington residents have enrolled in the program and have saved over $2,700,000 on prescription drugs. Those are significant numbers but there are 600,000 uninsured in our state, so I need your help to spread the word.

What sets the WA Prescription Drug Program (WPDP) Discount Card apart from all the other prescription discount cards in the market?

This card is FREE!
Every resident in the state is eligible regardless of age or income.

  • It’s easy to enroll: It takes only a minute to enroll on-line at www.rx.wa.gov, by phone toll-free1-800-913-4146, or by filling out one of our postage-paid enrollment forms which are available in bundles of 100 for FREE for your organization to distribute.
  • Excellent savings: Up to 60% discount on generic drugs and up to 20% discount on brand name drugs. The average overall savings for members using the card is 54%.
  • Convenient to use: The card is accepted by 450+ retail pharmacy locations throughout the state or get free home delivery from the mail order pharmacy: Wellpartner.
  • Great customer support: Toll-free customer service and access to a pharmacist from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (PST) Monday through Friday.

Clark County High Capacity Transit System Study

Clark County has seen significant economic and population growth over the past 25 years and future trends predict it will continue. However, growth has outpaced transportation investment, resulting in traffic congestion and travel delays. In response, the Clark County region is undertaking a High Capacity Transit (HCT) System Study to provide a framework for long-term investments in the region’s transit system. The purpose of the Clark County HCT System Study is to identify a HCT system that provides efficient and high quality transit service connecting county residents with where they want to go.
Currently, the five modes selected for further study are:

  1. Light rail transit
  2. Bus rapid transit
  3. Bus rapid transit lite
  4. Streetcar
  5. Commuter rail

The corridors that have been selected for further study include:

  1. SR 14/Mill Plain
  2. SR 500/Fourth Plain
  3. I-5/Highway 99
  4. I-205
  5. Chelatchie Prairie

The study’s recommendations are intended to help maintain the region’s growth and economic prosperity by providing additional mobility options to key activity centers and along major travel corridors. For more information visit the HCT website at www.rtc.wa.gov/hct.

FEBRUARY & MARCH AFTER HOURS EVENTS!

Columbia Bank, Woodland, hosted the Woodland Chamber of Commerce After Hours event in February 2008 and it was VERY successful. The food catered by Los Pepe’s was outstanding. Columbia Bank also gave away many nice gifts during their drawing. Many attended, enjoyed a glass of wine, networking and met some new businesses that have moved to our area and beyond.
Thank you to Columbia Bank, Carol Rounds and the staff for hosting this wonderful event.
Coldwell Banker: River Country Real Estate hosted the Woodland Chamber of Commerce After Hours in March. Ken & Sara Paul, owners, have been Chamber members for years and said they really enjoyed hosting their first After Hours event.

The food and wine were delicious and many new faces to our community enjoyed the time spent together and getting to know what else Woodland has to offer. Thank you to Ken & Sara, Marisa & Gary and the entire staff for making this event so much fun.

AFTER HOURS EVENT SCHEDULE FOR 2008 NEARLY BOOKED

Bill Behrens, Chairman of the After Hours Event Committee, has done an outstanding job in organizing these gatherings. Thanks for your hard work Bill!

Due to the constraint of only one After Hours per month the Chamber is unable to accommodate multiple monthly After Hours requests and recommends contacting the Woodland Downtown Revitalization Committee to take part in their May After Hours/Business Expo. This event, in the Grange Hall, always draws a crowd and can play host to a large number of businesses.

In addition Benno Dobbe of the Holland America Bulb Farm would be happy to talk to anyone who might like to highlight their business at the Tulip Festival beginning April 5th.

The past spaces at Holland America Bulb Farm have worked well for local businesses and vendors providing excellent exposure through the attendance for the Tulip Festival. For more information about these two up coming Chamber After Hours Events please contact the Chamber office at (360) 225-9552.
